What LTL freight means for pallet buyers

Less-than-truckload, or LTL, freight combines pallet shipments from multiple businesses on one carrier network. It is commonly used when you need more than a small parcel shipment but less than a full trailer.

The final cost depends on pallet count, dimensions, weight, freight class, origin, destination, delivery type, and accessorial services. The merchandise price alone is not the landed cost.

Commercial delivery versus residential delivery

Commercial addresses with a loading dock or forklift are usually easier for a carrier to serve. Residential delivery may require additional scheduling and a liftgate, and some carriers apply extra fees for limited access locations.

Tell the supplier how the shipment will be received before requesting a quote. A correct address type helps prevent re-rating and delivery delays.

When you need a liftgate

A liftgate lowers pallets from the truck when the delivery location does not have a dock or forklift. Confirm that the liftgate can handle your pallet dimensions and that someone will be available during the delivery appointment.

Provide accurate pallet count, dimensions, and weight.
Ask whether delivery is curbside or includes movement beyond the trailer.
Inspect visible damage and note it on the delivery receipt before signing.
